Mulhuddart Driving Test Route

In today’s video, we’ll be exploring the Mulhuddart driving test route for 2024. I’ll be sharing essential tips to help you pass your driving test at the Mulhuddart test centre. It’s no secret that Mulhuddart can be a challenging place to pass, with a pass rate of only 43.7% in 2022. This means more than half of the applicants fail their driving test here.

However, all is not lost. By watching the videos we’ve recorded on the Mulhuddart test routes, you can significantly boost your chances of success. Below, I’ve compiled some of the best clips from the four Mulhuddart driving test routes into this informative tips video.

1. Navigating Cross Junctions: Staying in the Left Lane

Let’s start with an important tip about cross junctions. You might be wondering why I always move into the left lane at these intersections. Many people ask, “Why change lanes and drive into the left lane?”

When driving on a road with two or more lanes, the correct position is generally in the left lane, unless it’s a bus lane or a hard shoulder. Once the bus lane ends, it’s crucial to correct your position by moving back into the left lane.

Positioning at Cross Junctions

Another reason to stay in the left lane is highlighted in the RSA marking sheet guidelines. They recommend that when driving through a cross junction, you should be as close to the left-hand side as possible.

2. Progressing Onto the N3: Maintaining Speed and Safety

Next, let’s talk about progressing onto the N3, a key area in the Mulhuddart driving test route. When you approach this section, the examiner will closely observe whether you can comfortably increase your speed and reach the speed limit. Remember, the speed limit on the N3 is 100 km/h, and you’re expected to reach it if it’s safe to do so.

Safe Lane Changing

If your test route takes you onto the N3, you’ll also need to change lanes safely. The examiner will check that you’re using your mirrors, signaling, and merging into the lane only when it’s safe. Make sure to keep your speed up and merge at the first available safe gap.

3. Tackling the Blanchardstown Shopping Centre Roundabout

The roundabout at Blanchardstown Shopping Centre is another tricky spot for learner drivers. This roundabout can be extremely busy, making it difficult to navigate, especially during the driving test.

Two Approaches to the Roundabout

In this section of the Mulhuddart driving test route, we tackle the roundabout in two ways:

  1. Going straight through the roundabout and taking the second exit.
  2. Taking the third exit to the right.

Check out the video below to see how to handle this part of the route effectively.

4. Navigating Through Huntstown: Handling Hazards and Narrow Roads

Next, we’ll drive through some of the less explored areas of the Mulhuddart test route, particularly Huntstown. This area is known for its large speed bumps, so make sure to slow your car down and drive over them in second gear. Additionally, the roads in the housing estate are quite narrow, requiring you to be extra vigilant in reacting to hazards and maintaining the correct position on bends.

Planning Ahead in Narrow Roads

Because the roads are so narrow, it’s crucial to plan ahead and react to hazards effectively. A good rule of thumb is to give way if the hazard is on your side of the road.

5. One-Way Roads and Turning Right Onto the N3

Finally, let’s discuss a critical tip for turning right back onto the N3 and returning to the test centre. This right turn is where many learner drivers fail their test because they don’t realize the road is a one-way street. If you mistakenly stay in the far-left lane, you’ll have a hard time getting back across to turn right onto the N3.

Keeping an Eye on Road Markings

Pay close attention to the road markings here. To turn right, you must stay in the right-hand or middle lane. During your driving test, you’ll be expected to position yourself correctly in the right lane.

Driving around the Mulhuddart test routes is always an exciting challenge for me, as I never know what to expect. If you have a driving test scheduled at the Mulhuddart test centre, I highly recommend getting familiar with the area. This familiarity will significantly increase your chances of passing your driving test.
